Clarence Day's most famous work is his autobiographical
Life with Father, published in 1935, which detailed humorous episodes in his family life during the 1890's in New York City.
Scenes from the book formed the basis for the Lindsey/Crouse play of the same name, which debuted on Broadway in 1939 and still holds the record for the number of performances by a non-musical. The Day family members -- all of whom have red hair -- include an irascible father, his devoted but determined wife, and four sons age 6 to 17. Life with Father is a family show in every sense of the word.
