Interesting Information about the Triathlon:
A total of 476 participants registered. The race was increased from 450 competitors to 500 in 1990. There were 358 finishers, and 11 did not finish.
Lynn Lillienthal, participant, collided with a cat on Glade Drive during the bike ride. She sustained a serious fracture. The cat's fate is unknown.
The swim was staggered in four groups with 5 minutes separating each group. A number of women feared being run over by the aggressive men per Joe Stowers' recollection.
Norm Happ stated that he and Ed Hass did the scoring using a bar code system and a computer program called Run Score. The first year (1984), the scoring was done on a MAC at Robin Weber's house, and later Rich Uhrig created a spreadsheet with all the splits -- more data than the average space station. The temperature was cool and overcast, thus no heat-related injuries.
The Hartke family started the post race party at their lakeside home near the turn around point on Lake Audubon. The hosts were members of the Reston Area Triathletes (RATs).
