Reston Association staff observed an increase in training in the lakes over the last several years. Training included organized group swims from the boat ramp on Lake Audubon. The Reston Association is understandably concerned about the potential for injury or drowning.
Swimming in Reston lakes is illegal. The Reston Association also highly discourages swimming by homeowners on the lakes.
The lakes are the property of the Reston Homeowners Association and the Reston Triathlon must have the association’s permission each year to use this property for the triathlon. If the training does not stop, the Reston Association can deny permission to use the lake for the race. In other words, by swimming in the lakes, you jeopardize the future existence of the Reston Triathlon!
To decrease the illegal use of the lakes, the Reston Association will be stepping up its enforcement of the swimming prohibition. By swimming in the lakes you are subject to being ticketed by Fairfax County Police for trespassing.
The Reston Triathlon has continuously stated in our informational materials that training in the Reston lakes is not permitted. The Reston Triathlon directors want to emphasize that illegal swim training in the Reston lakes by Reston Triathlon participants MUST stop!
As a condition of acceptance of registration to participate in the Reston Triathlon, the Reston Triathlon directors reserve the right to revoke the registration without refund for any registered triathlete violating the prohibition on swimming in Lake Audubon.
We look forward to seeing you on September 10th and 11th for the 22nd annual Reston Triathlon.
