RESTON TRIATHLON HISTORY
The following is Joe Stowers' "Top 10 List":
- The very small and very local first race (1984) -- which kind of set the tone for the following 24 years.
- The one and only year it rained and all the young whippersnappers took bike spills (1985 or 6?).
- Losing BJ Silvey's son in the swim (1985?).
- All the women's serious complaints (especially Abbie Edwards) about being ruthlessly run over by the aggressive men back when they were in the first wave (late 1980s?).
- The tough female cop who destroyed our original bike course (late 1980s?) by eliminating the infamous Hunter Station Road "hill".
- Paula Stowers' infamous last minute training which qualified her for life-time membership in the "Young and Stupid Club" -- arriving on the red-eye 24 hours before the race; getting her bike out; and charging up Hunter Station Road 3 times (late 1990s?).
- Tom Conrad's commitment to "I don't have to train" (e.g., swim no more than 0.9 miles before the race), which ended with the event that changed his life when he freaked out in the swim (1999).
- The filthy lake training swim (2006).
- Terry Smith's comeback after his serious cancer operation (2006).
- Terry Smith's death during or just after the 2007 race.
