"I have a few different recollections than Norm about the early years. Norm was the sole director in 1984 and 1985, though he was assisted, or perhaps impeded, by a large unwieldy committee of about 20. In 1986, Bruce Titus was the sole director. When he bowed out, we came up with the idea of having a team of three directors, and in 1987, they were Norm, me, and Catherine Nelson. In 1988, Lea Gallardo replaced Catherine as the third director (although maybe it was Lea in 1987 and Catherine in 1988) and in 1989 and 1990, the third was Beth O'Connor (now Beth O'Connor-Baker). The B-106 year was 1985, when it was so hot that several people were treated for heat-related illness after the event, including a few helicopter evacuees. 1985 was also the year that we had at least three members of Congress, including Frank Wolf, finish the race.
"One of the big concerns always was getting an accurate measurement of the one-mile lake swim.
"Dr. Tom Fleeter was recruited as Medical Director right from the start. He got some of the Reston Hospital ER folks to help out. That may have been the beginning of the Reston Hospital's continued involvement to now.
