Interesting Information about the Triathlon:
John Buechler placed an engagement ring on a power bar on the handlebars of Jenni Demoko's bike. She found it and wore it for the rest of the race. They became engaged while racing.
Hurricane Fran threatened to make a mess of the Triathlon. Thanks to volunteers, the bike and leg race courses got cleaned up. The lake still had lots of debris for the swim.
It was estimated that 4,100 slices of pizza, 500 bananas, 336 oranges, 150 loaves of bread, and 40 cases of soda were devoured by participants, volunteers, and friends.
Jim Desrosiers had a bike accident which created a legend out of his helmet. It is shown to young bikers by the Boy Scouts each year.
For the second consecutive year, the Triathlon relied on computers to produce quick and accurate race results. Two computers were set up at each transition area and one at the finish line. The computer operator pressed a button as each triathlete passed, a backup plan involving handwritten times was in place, but, save for a 15 minute computer glitch at a tunnel inside South Lakes High School, it was not needed. Randy Skovrinksi and Jim Moesesso handled the race results.
The weather was hot and muggy in the aftermath of Hurricane Fran.
