Interesting Information about the Triathlon:
Problems caused a late start this year.
Town founder, Robert E. Simon, Jr., stated that while the Triathlon wasn't part of the Reston Master Plan, it deserves a special place in history. The race now brings out the County's VIPs as it has become such an important community activity. Hunter Mill Supervisor, Robert B. Dix, helped with the start of the race for the third year in a row. Warner Cable Channel 8 of Reston was on hand to film the event.
Elite athletes started to complain that they should be entered if they fit the tri-Fed Mid-Atlantic Championship Criteria. This Triathlon has and continues to favor locals. Up to this year it has been sanctioned by the Tri-Fed, but this year was also designated as its Mid-Atlantic Championship race.
