Interesting Information about the Triathlon:
A total of 489 participants entered. Registration cost $50.00. There were 366 finishers.
The swim was divided into five heats starting five minutes apart.
At the corner of Hunter Mill Road and Sunrise Drive, three bikers were cut off by a car and one racer, Byron Derringer, flipped over and had to take himself out of the race. This was the most serious accident of the day.
Not only was the winner in each age group honored, but also the 17 triathletes who had completed all ten Reston Triathlons. The Reston residents who had completed all 10 were: Barbara Happ, Gale Gordon, Neil Medoff, Dale Dunlop, and Joe Stowers. Bob Lambert, Bart and Tom Conrad, Terry Smith, and Tom Voeller. Others in this elite group were Rick Uhrig, Jerry Bonnes, Dixon Hemphill, David Oliver, Dottie Esher, Myron Lehman, and Howard Stoodly, all of whom lived in the Washington Metro Area.
Approximately 600 volunteers aided the event. The weather was excellent.
